Colman, one of the commonest names in Old Irish, even before the time of S. Columba (Macneill, Oghams, p. 332), is for earlier Columban (Rev. celt., XLIV, p. 41). An ogham inscription found at Glanawi an, Cork reads (MacAlister, III, p. 40): Colomagni avi Ducagni, where Colomagnos (nom.) is a diminutive in -agnos (later reduced to -an) of Colum. The name is a borrowing from Latin columba, 'a dove.' The name was home by two hundred and eighteen saints, of which ninety-four are commemorated in the Martyrology of Donegal. Later it became Caiman. This form was borrowed in Old West Scandinavian, and Kalman the Irishman (irskr) was one of the earliest Norse settlers in Iceland (Landnamabok, 15). William Colman was declared innocent of part in detention of King James III in Edinburgh Castle, 1482 (Lennox, II, p. 123).
