All of the surname Colosimo originate from the small town or enclave in Calabria, Southern Italy called Colosimi. The name Colosimo is probably ancient Greek in origin noting that the town of Colosimi is recorded to have existed since well before the 7th century AD. Southern Italy was originally a part of Greca Magna (Greece). There are two words which form Colosimo. The first is Colosi, as in the Greek word Colossi or Kolossi being the plural of Colossus. The meaning is, people of enormous importance or ability. The second is -mo, which in Southern Italy means 'as' or for a long period of time. Overall, the name Colosimo means people of enormous importance or ability that have existed for a long period of time. Colosimi has a similar meaning but the mi means me or here are hence having the overall meaning of, here are the people of enormous importance or ability. It has been speculated given the first masonic (as in freemasonry) workshop was held in 1813 in Colosimi there could be a connection with the great Greek philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras or his followers The Pythagoreans. Pythagorean practices and symbology have much in common with modern freemasonry. It may not be a coincidence that Colosimi is within a days walk of Crotone (originally called Croton or Kroton) where Pythagoras settled two and a half thousand years ago. There is a museum of Pythagoras in Crotone. It may thus be speculated that those with the surname Colosimo may be descendants of the Pythagoreans and is hence the reason for the meaning of the place name Colosimi and the surname Colosimo.
