Colp Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

COLP, Culp: Of local origin from the small place named Colp near Turriff, Aberdeenshire. Johannes Coup is recorded in Aberdeen, 1408 (CWA., p. 312). A "commone hande bell, with ale proffetis," was granted to William Colp and his son, David Colp in the same town in 1503 (CRA., p. 72), and a payment was made in 1518 to Sir Andrew Cup, evidently a cleric (ibid., p. 95). Local tradition has it that on the morning of Sir John Cope's arrival at Naim in 1745"the wife of a fisherman presented her husband with a son, who in commemoration of the event, was christened John Cope Main. Descendants of this infant are still to be found among the fishing community of Naim. They still bear the name Main Cope or Coup" (Rampini, A history of Moray and Nairn, p. 214). So much for unveracious local history.
