There was a barony of Colt or Cult in Perthshire from which the name may have come. William Culte de Strathawen, Lanarkshire, took the oath of fealty, 1296. John Colti held land in barony of Lastalryk before 1365 (RMS., I, 200), Thomas Colt is mentioned in Perth, 1440 (RAA., II, 362), and John Colt was one of the tenants of Moneydie, 1483. James Colt and Andro Colt appear as witnesses in Perth, 1547 and 1551 (Rollok, 43, 75). Andrew Colt was vicar of Redgorton, 1574-91, and Oliver Colt was procurator for the burgh of Irvine, 1590 (Irvine, I, p. 63). A succession of Colts were merchant burgesses of Perth in the sixteenth century, and the Colts of Gartsherrie, Lanarkshire, are said to be an offshoot from the Perthshire family.

Ferguson thinks this a corruption of the name Gold; but it appears in the XIII. cent. in its present form, and I see no reason why it should not be derived from the animal, especially as Le Colt is found in H.R. The Colts of co. Lanark derive from Blaise Coult, a French Huguenot refugee in the XVI. cent.

Ferguson thinks this may be a High German form of Gold. Lower says it appears in the thirteenth century in its present form, and he sees no reason why it should not be derived from the animal, especially as Le Colt is found in H.R. He says further that the Colts of co. Lanark derive from Blaise Coult, a French Huguenot refugee in the sixteenth century. I consider it a corruption of Collett, a diminutive of Coll, from Nicoll.
