Coltart Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This surname is derived from an occupation. 'the coltherd'.

A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

Explained as from Coltard-Colt herd, Old English colt + hierde. Of the Coultharts of Galloway a ridiculous genealogy has been published, in which the family are traced to one Coulthartus, a Roman soldier who fought in the battle of Mons Graupius. The local pronunciation in the Stewartry is Cowtart. Lower says probably from Coudhart, a village in the department of Orne, NE. of Argentan in Normandy. He says the name is no doubt territorial as it is written with "de" in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. Alan Colthird witnessed the sealing of an inquest at Berwick anent a fishing on the Tweed in 1467 (RD., p. 359). John Colthird, tailor in Edinburgh, 1619 (Sastnes, II, 51), John Coltart in Waistwood, 1627 (Dumfries), and Jean Colthart or Colthird in Kirkcudbright, 1666 (Kirkcudbright). William Cultert and Robert Cultert were residents in the parish of Buittle, 1684 (RPC., 3. ser. IX, p. 570), and James Colthird in Snaipsheid, 1663, and sixteen more of the name are recorded in the Commissariot Record of Lanark. James and Michael Coutart were present at conventicles in 1686 (RPC., 3. ser. XIII, p. 22, 23), James Coulthred was chamberlain of Crawfurdjohn in the same year (ibid., XII, p. 424), and Adam Coutert was witness in Ayr, 1687 (Ayr, p. 211).
