Coltrane Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

The first Acoltrane is found in the Wigtownshire Charters (Scotland) edited by R.C. Reid where in 1497 Michael AColtrane was a bailie who witnessed the granting of land to John Dunbar and Janet Stewart. Other first names found at this time include Rolland and Thomas. In 1579 the will of Rolland AColtrane of Mochrum (Scotland) lists wife Christine McCrekane and children Patrick, John, William, Allison and Marion. In 1629 the first Coltrane to receive land was Patrick Coltrane, merchant burgess of Wigtown and Janet McKie, spouse, from Sir John Vans of Longcastell. (See Wigton Sasines ii f.59). It is likely that this Patrick Coltrane is the father of Patrick Coltrane (abt 1625-1 Mar 1674) of Culmazie and Airless. The later individual and some of his landed descendants are described in History of Lands and their Owners in Galloway by Peter H McKerlie. It is very possible that the Coltrane name came from the Cistercian monastery called Holm Cultram established in 1150. For 200 years the abbey rented land in Galloway, Scotland. It is known that some Scottish surnames are based on place names and in the case of AColtrane, such a person came from Coltrane or Cultram.
