From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
COLTRAN: An old surname in Galloway, but now uncommon. Michael Acoltrain in Wigtown, 1511 (ALHT., IV p. 160). Patrick Coltrane had sasine of lands of Culmalzie, parish of Kirkinner, 1663 (M'Kerlie, I, p. 407), and in 1667 was provost of Wigtown, owner of the lands of Kirwaugh, Culmalzie, and others in the parish of Kirkinner. Andrew Coltran in Barglass, parish of Kirkinner, 1684 (RPC., 3. ser. X, p. 265). William Coltrane who signed letters to the Privy Council, 1688 (ibid., XIII, p. 282), is probably William Coltrane, provost of Wigtown, 1693 and 1709, and the William Cultran one of the commissioners for trade in the Scots Parliament, 1700 (Hume of Crossrig's Diary, p. 11). Tradition assigns to the provost of Wigtown a prominent part in the apprehension and drowning of Margaret McLauchlane and Margaret Wilson, the Wigtown martyrs.
