Coffin, which is still found in Devon as a surname (v. Coffin), is in many cases but a variant.

A vernacular pronunciation of Colville, which see. compare Melvin-Melville. John Colvin in the parish of Bothkennar, 1680 (Stirling). In the sixteenth century the same person is recorded as Colville and Collwyne (Protocols, II, 106,108). There was an earlier Colvin from Old English Colwine, but the Scottish surname is undoubtedly from Colville.
