John Conan de Conansythe mentioned in 1387 appears in 1394 as John de Conane dominus de Connansytht (RAA., II, p. 39, 42). David Conan witnesses an "instrament of sessyn" of the bell of S. Meddan in 1447 (SCM., IV, p. 118), Thomas Connane in Glenbuchet had a remission in 1603 (SCM., IV, p. 159), and Alexander Conand is recorded in Kinharrachie, Ellon, 1640 (Mair, p. 86). Gaelic Connan, a diminutive of Conn. The first is an old surname in Aberdeenshire and in Banffshire, and there were families of this name in Glenbuchat in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. They were followers of the earls of Huntly, and took part in the battle of Glenlivat, 1594. Several Connons from Turriff and neighborhood served in the first Great War (Turriff).
