Conaughton Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

As mentioned in Irish Families p. 237 Connaughton is sometimes abbreviated to Naughton and so is liable to be confused with (Ó Nachtáin. Connaughton, however, is Ó Connachtain in Irish. This is the name of an important sept originally located in the north of the present Co. Sligo, where they were of importance, as we know from the Annals and other sources for mediaeval times. Later they migrated to Co. Roscommon. Its proximity there to the homeland of the O'Naughtens of Ui Maine adds to the chances of the two names becoming confused. At the inaugration of the kings of Connacht on the Hill of Carnfraoigh, near Tulsk, it was the hereditary duty of the Connaughtons. to guard the entrance to the cam. People of the name are still found mainly in Counties Roscommon and Sligo: the deplorable practice of spelling the name Connerton or Connorton, which was quite common in the last century, appears to have been given up and the intrusive R dropped in most places, though it is still occasionally retained in Co. Galway.
