This surname is derived from an occupation. 'the conder,' one who signals to boats from a height the direction takenbyshoals of herring orpilchards; from con, to con, to observe closely. 'Conders (of a ship), those who cond or give direction to the steersman for guiding or governing of a ship' (Bailey, 1737). An Act, James I, c. xxiii, says, 'persons called Balcors, Huors.
Condors, Directors, or Guidors, at the fishing tymes ... have used to watch and attend upon the high hilles and grounde near adjoining to the sea coast ... for the givinge notice to the fishermen.'

"Conders (in Fishery) are those who stand upon high places near the sea-coasts, with boughs, &c., in their hands, to make signs to the men in fishing-boats, which way the shoal of herrings passes, which they discover by a kind of blue colour the fish make in the water."
