Fergus filius Coning who witnessed a charter by Maldounech, third earl of Levenax (Levenax, p. 96), is doubtless Fergus filius Cuning who held land c. 1225—70 (RMP., p. 161). Six Conings are recorded in Wigtownshire in eighteenth century (Wigtown), and the name still exists there. In 1684 (Parish): Conneln, Connin, and Conning. Conaing is an old Irish personal name, perhaps of Norse origin.
