The name 'Contencin' seems to be derived from the name 'Contentin'. In ancient times, this was the name of the promontory of land that juts out from France into the English Channel, between Normandy and Brittany.

The name 'Contentin' is a corruption of the name Constantia, the name given to the town by Emperor Constantius. A very large number of people, who came with William the Conqueror, were people from the land originally called Contentin.

The modern name has now changed and softened into Coutances (pronounced Cootongsay).

My ancestor, Rene Contencin, was a Huguenot, who went to Fowey in Cornwall in 1717 and was a vitner from Chatelleralt (between Tours and Poitiers, France).
