CONVALL: Irish Conmhaol (from early Kunovalos, 'high mighty' one). Fordun (Chronica, III, 29) records S. Convallus, an Irish saint one of S. Kentigern's principal disciples, renowned for miracles and virtues, whose bones rest buried at Inchinnan near Renfrew. As no boat was available for him to cross the channel from Ireland to Scotland he was miraculously conveyed across upon a large stone now said to be lying within the grounds of Blythswood. Convallus de Akinhead was a charter witness in Dumbartonshire, 1372 (Levenax, p. 59), and Convallus de Kelle witnessed an instrument of sasine of the lands of Mernys and Netherpollok in 1454 (Pollok, I, p. 176).
