Conyers Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

When this name is met in Ireland it is often an anglicized form of O'Connor — one of those cases of the assumption of an aristocratic sounding surname of Norman origin like D'Evelyn for Devlin, Hastings for O'Hestin and Melville for Mulvihill. In England Conyers was originally de Coignieres.

This family was represented in Ireland by Ralph Conyers of Tarbert, who was a poll-money commissioner for Co. Kerry in 1660 and 1661. Thence also came the place name Castletown-Conyers in Co.

Limerick, which was formerly Castletown-MacEneiry. Conyers has been reported in fairly recent times as in use synonymously with Connor in Co. Roscommon while Cunnyer was similarly reported for Co.

Derry. Turning to the seventeenth century we find both O'Conier and O'Cunier in the Co. Monaghan hearth money rolls. It is unlikely, however, that these are synonyms of O'Connor.

Supplement to Irish Families (1964) by Edward MacLysaght

The well known family of Cos. Kerry and Limerick was originally de Coignières. Elsewhere the name was adopted by some families of O’Connor anxious to conceal their Gaelic origin. SIF 40

Dictionary of American Family Names (1956) by Elsdon Coles Smith

"Of this ancient family, originally wrote Coigniers, denominated from a place of that name in France, was Roger de Coigniers, that came into England about the end of the reign of Will, the Conqueror, to whom the bishop of Durham gave the constableship of Durham." Kimber. The family gave the suffix to Howton Coigniers, co. York.

Patronymica Britannica (1860) by Mark Antony Lower

An Etymological Dictionary of Family and Christian Names (1857) by William Arthur

From Coignieres, Isle of France. Roger de Conneris lived t. Stephen (Wiffen, Mem. of Russell, i. 16). In 1165 Roger de Coneres held three fees from the See of Durham, and Ralph de C. lands in Norfolk from De Albini. The elder line assumed the name of Norton from its ‘caput baroniæ,’ and from it descended the Lords Grantley, representatives of the eminent judge Sir Fletcher Norton. See Norton.
