Cooling Surname Definition:

At first sight this would appear to be a variant of the English name Couling (derived from a place in Yorkshire); but this may not be so, since the traditional pronunciation of the name in Ireland, preserved by the family in spite of its being invariably pronounced by strangers in accordance with the spelling, is Culling, with the emphasis on the second syllable.

Cooling Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Richard Foley suggests (N.L.I.Ms.G.84l) that it is a Gaelic Irish name viz. Ó Cúilfhinn. I make no comment on this. If John Cullyng, described as of Ardee in 1450, was a mediaeval member of the family now called Cooling, they are established in this country over five centuries: they are now counted as a Co. Wicklow family.
