From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Most probably from Coupland in the parish of Kirk Newton, Northumberland. There is, however, a district in Cumberland bearing the same name. William de Copland was one of the witnesses to the gift of Dundas to Helias, son of Huctred, c. 1160 (Nat. MSS., I), Thomas de Coupland held a land in the vill of Greenlaw, c. 1200 (Kelso, 78), and about the same time Rodbert de Copland witnessed a charter by Roger de Quenci (LSC., 36). Sampson de Coupland was one of the assessors selected to settle the law of the marches, 1249. Robertas de Coupland witnessed a sale of land in Glasgow, c. 1280—90 (REG., p. 198). Payment was made to Thomas de Coupeland, esquire of Sir Thomas de Multone in 1306 (Bain, II, p. 512). John de Coupland was the hero of the battle of Neville's Cross in 1346, when he took David 11 prisoner. John de Coupland had a charter of the lands of Altonburn c. 1354 (HMC., 14. Rep, App., pt. 3, p. 8). His seal is a shield couche bearing what appears to be a cross, etc., S' Johis de Coupland (ibid.). The surname early made its way north and is found in Orkney in 1455, and appears in the Scat Book of Zetland c. 1500. Copland 1488, Coupillande 1456, Cowpelande 1550, Cowpland and Cowpelande 1465.
