Coppinger Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
Of Norse origin this family settled in Cork city and county in the early fourteenth century. IF 287; Map Cork
(English) Dweller at the hilltop meadow.
' Copenere ' is the Anglo-Saxon for lover; but a more probable derivation is from coppin, which Halliwell defines as ' a piece of yarn taken from the spindle.' A Coppinger was then perhaps in medieval times one who had the care of yarn or who produced it. To live like a Coppihger is a Suffolk proverb, which points to the wealth and hospitality of a family of this name who flourished in the XVI. and XVII. cent. at Buxhall in that county. Gent. Mag. Jan. 1831. The name is found in the archives of Cork so early as temp. Edw. II. R.L.G.
From the Old Norse, Kaupungr; nickname from the Danish, Koeppen; from the Swedish, Koppang; from the Dutch, Koppen; a personal name.$
