It's a toponymic surname from a hill and a contrada in the village of San Donato called Còl de Bèla (Coldebella), means 'hill of beautiful girl' (col della bella), may have another meaning, 'hill of the beast' (col della belva). According to some local tales, 2 coal burners, lived there, and fought wolves in the firelight during the night, and then came the name (Col della Belva), which later may have been changed to Col de Bella.

Or in a more remote period, some soldiers or travelers, while traveling on Via Claudia Augusta named the place and the hill for a beautiful girl, maybe in Latin.
