From the occupation, 'the cordwainer,' AF. cordewaner, the shoemaker who made shoes of goat-skin leather, which came, or was supposed to come, from Cordova in Andalusia, Spain. Thomas Cordonar was admitted burgess of Aberdeen, 1442 (NSCM., I, p. 7), Adam Cordonar witnessed a notarial instrument in Dumfries, 1453 (Edgar, p. 225), Robert Cordoner held land in Kyntor, 1498 (REA., I, p. 341), and the goods of John Cordonar in Jedworthe were wasted in 1502 (Trials I, p. 27). Donald Cordinair in Little Suddie, Avoch, was a tanner in 1620 (RPC., XII, p. 472), John Cordiner in Seater, Caithness, was a follower of Sinclair of Moy, 1670 (ibid., 3. ser. III, p. 194), and Charles Cordiner, Episcopal minister in Banff, published a work on the Antiquities and scenery of the north of Scotland, 1780. The Cordiners were erected into a fraternity in Edinburgh 28th July 1349 (Maitland, Edinburgh, p. 305). The name of Radulph Cordwan, a tenant in Perth, c. 1330 (RAA., II, p. 8, 9), may mean that he was a native of Cordova. Cordonnar 1659 Cordownar 1657.
