From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
(French-Latin) 1 = Corderoy, q.v. [Old French rey, rei (French roi), king] 2 Dweller at a Rope-Walk [French corderie; from corde, a rope, Latin chorda, a string] There has doubtless been some confusion with Cawdery, q.v.
French Cceur de Roi, king-hearted; metaphorically applied to a man of noble and generous disposition. Perhaps, however, the same as Cowdray.
Found Cordaroy, Cordrey, Cordery, Cowderoy, Cowdery, Cowdrey, Cowdray, Cawdrey, Coudray, Coudraie, Coudre, Couldery, Couldrey; from French coudraie, a hazel-grove; from coudre, from corylus, a hazel-tree. Lower says the map of Normandy exhibits many localities called "Le Coudray," and that there is also an estate called Cowdray, near Midhurst, in Sussex; and he mentions a De Coudray in H.R. compare the French name Coudrette, signifying a hazel-grove.
The Corderoys were a gentle family numerously represented in Chute, Wilts, in the 16th and 17th centuries; and those of the name who had settled elsewhere often found their resting - place in the church of their Wiltshire home. Edward Corderoy of Andover, for instance, was buried there in 1635, and William Corderoy of Clatford, was buried there in 1636 (Coll. Top. et Gen.). Robert Corderoy was mayor of Devizes, Wilts, in 1592 (Bull's "Devizes"). Cowderoy Park is a seat in Sussex.
