From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

CORNTON: Probably from Cornon near Bridge of Allan, Stirlingshire. John de Corintoun, chaplain, who witnessed charter of the office of coronator of Lennox, 1400 (Levenax, p. 95), is doubdess the Johannes de Corntoun, vicar of Stryvelyne, 1413 (RMS., I, 950). George Cornetoun recorded in Edinburgh, 1493 (CDE., 56), and the seal of Florence Corntoun is appended to sasine of a tenement in Leith, 1554 (Macdonald, 502). Henrie Corntoun, inhabitant of the town of Quhiterne, 1553 (Dumfriesshire and Galloway Nat. Hist, and Ant. Soc., Trans., 3. ser. XXI, p. 302)

The first of this name in Scotland appears to have been Robert de Cornewall who witnessed a charter by Hugh, bishop of St. Andrews granting the lands of Malar to the abbot and canons of Stirling, c. 1180 (Cambus.). Mr. Richard Cornell was archdeacon of Dunkeld, 1406, and professor of canon law in University of St. Andrews, 1410 (Tytler, Hist, of Scot., II, p. 43). Sir John Cornwell, vicar of Telyne (Tealing) in Angus, 1450 (Illus., III, p. 135). Johne of Cornewal of Bonhard was billed at Fiodden, 1513, and John Cornuell was witness in Crail, 1526 (Crail, p. 39). Nicholas Cornwall of Bonhard was provost of Linlithgow and a commissioner for holding parliament, 1592 (APS., III, p. 527). Archibald Cornwall, town-officer of Edinburgh, was hanged in the city in 1601 for having, at the sale of some sequestrated goods at the Cross, driven a nail into the gibbet standing close by, intending to suspend on it a portrait of the king on a board that was among them, for the purpose of its being better seen, but was dissuaded from doing so by those present. His action was considered by the authorities as lese-majestle. Donald Cornell, heir of Malcolm Cornell, burgess of Perth, 1604 (Inputs., 177). Marie Carnewall in the parish of Logie, 1674 (Dunblane), and Duncan Cornel in Hill of Arnfinlay, parish of Kippen, 1734. Cornwalls were seated at Bonhard early in the fifteenth century, and the direct line ended on the death of Elizabeth, heiress of Bonhard in 1763.
