CORMANNO: From Carmunnock in Lanarkshire. The surname probably now extinct. Henry de Cormannok witnessed a charter by Alan filius Walter, 1179—99 (RMP., p. 12), and between 1189—99 another charter by William the Lion (ibid., p. 101). As de Cormanoc he attested gift of a toft in Stirling by the same king to the church of Glasgow between 1189—99 (REG., p. 67), and also witnessed William de Moreuille's charter of Gillemoristun to Edulfus filius Uctredi before 1196 (ibid., p. 40). As de Curmannoc he attested another charter by Alan filius Walteri c. 1202 (RMP., p. 14). Perhaps it was a succeeding Henry de Cormunnoc who witnessed a confirmation charter by Alexander II in 1225 (Levenax, p. 92). Stevene de Cormanoughe of Lanarkshire rendered homage, 1296 (Bain, II, p. 212). Early in the sixteenth century the name appears in Dundee. Sir John Cormanno (Carmannoch, Cormannocht), chupiain in Sounde, is in record 1506—15 (Rent. Dunk., p. 3, 7,19), Robert Curmannow was burgess in Dundee, 1534 (RMS., III, 1398), James Carmanno and Cristian Carmanow are mentioned there in 1588 and 1589 (Wedd., p. 30,217), and Gilbert Carmano was burgess there, 1610 (Brechin).
