(English) belonging to Cornhill, or Dweller at the Corn or Cornel-Tree Hill [Old English corn(-treów) + hyll] The metropolitan Cornhill, of course, refers to a corn-market.
A baronial family, of whom William Corniole held a barony in Kent, 1086 (Domesd.); Reginald de Cornhull in 1165 (Liber Niger); and Gervase de C. a tief from the Earl of Essex (Ib.). The latter was Viscount of Kent, 1168-73, and the family frequently held that office afterwards (Hasted, Kent). Robert Cornel occurs in Normandy, 1180-95 (Mag. Rot. Scac.).
