This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'at the corrie.' Such at least seems to be the origin of this well-known Scotch surname. It is introduced here simply because it looks English, and is found in one variant or another in every considerable English town. Sir Walter Scott, in his Lady of the Lake, has 'Fleet foot in the corrie,' and a footnote explains thus: 'Corrie or Cori, the hollow side of the hill where game usually lies.'

From the lands of Corrie now included in the parish of Hutton-Corrie, Dumfriesshire. Hugh de Corrie witnessed a charter of a fishery in Torduf c. 1194—1211 (Holm Cultram, p. 35), and as de Corri he witnessed resignation of land in Weremundebi and Anant within the same period (Bain, I, 606; Annandale, I, p. I, 2). Radulph de Cony witnessed a charter by Henry de Grahame a. 1200 (RHM., 3). Walterus de Corri and Nicholas de Corri witnessed a charter by the earl of Carrick c. 1271 (Annandale, I, p. 8), and Nicholas is recorded as steward of Annandale in that year. Walter de Corry or de Corri, cousin and one of the heirs of Helewisa de Levynton, rendered homage to Edward I for his portion of her lands held in capite, 1274 (Bain, II, 21). Nicol de Corry of Dumfriesshire and Sir Walter de Corri rendered homage in 1296 (ibid., p. 194,206). Adam of Corry, one of the garrison of Loghmaban Castle, had a fiat of protection for one year in 1379 (ibid., IV, 280), and Harbard or Harbarte of Corre was one of the 'borowis' for the earl of Douglas's bounds of the West March in 1398 (ibid., 504). Gilbert of Corry had a charter of the lands of Tordufi and Dalbank in 1449 (Annandale, I, p. 13), and Thomas Corry of Keldwood, a follower of the earl of Cassilis, was respited for murder in 1526 (RSS., I, 3386). George Corry was retoured heir of Thomas Corri de Kelwode, Ayr, who was killed at the battle of Fawsyde, 1547 (Retours, Ayr, 2). John Maitland Corrie, archaeologist, died in Dumfries, 1940.
