COSCRACH: From cos-carach, 'victorious (Rel. Celt., II, p. 604). Coserach or Coscarach occurs but rarely in Scotland, but was fairly common in Ireland. Drostan mac Cosgreg came from Hi with Colum Cille to Aberdeen in Buchan according to the legend in the Book of Deer. Duuene filius Croscrach witnessed the gift by Alewinus, earl of Leuenax of the church of Kamsi (Campsie) to God and S. Kentigern, c. 1208—14, and as Duuene filius Coscrach he witnessed another charter relating to the same church by Alewinus, son of Maldouen (REG., p. 87, 88). Donald Coskroch and Neill Coskroch in Kip, parish of Balquhidder, appear in 1663 and 1685 (Dunblane). John Coskrie in Strathmoddie, 1799 (Wig town). See also Maccoskrie.
