COSPATRIC: A common personal name in the twelfth century, spelled Gospatric in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, Cospatricius in Simeon of Durham, Cospatlicus on the tombstone at Durham, and Caius Patricius in Orderic Vitalis (bk. IV, c. 5). In the Life of Edward (1066—74) It is Caius Patricius (ES., II, p. 39). It means 'servant of Patrick,' from W. gwas, 'a youth, servant.' Cospatric frater Dalfin, Cospatric filius Uctred, and Cospatric filius Alden all appear as witnesses to Earl David's Inquisitio as to the extent of the lands of the church of Glasgow, c. 1124 (REG., p. 5). Cospatricius romefare (so named from having made the pilgrimage to Rome) and Cospatricius, heremita de Kylbewhoc, were witnesses to the Diuise de Stobbo, c. 1180 (ibid., p. 89). Cospatrick filius Madad witnessed a charter by Fergus, earl of Buchan a. 1214 (CAB., p. 409), and c. 1220 as Cospatric Macmadethyn he had a charter of Stratheyn and Kyndrochet from William Cumyne, earl of Buchan (REA., I, p. 14).
