Of the three Cosins in the Dictionary of National Biography, Edmund Cosin. or Cosyn, Vice-chancellor of Cambridge University (fl. 1558), was a native of Bedfordshire; the great John Cosin, bishop of Durham, (born 1594), was a native of Norwich; and the civil lawyer, Richard Cosin (1549-1597) was born at Hartlepool.
Cossens of that Ilk, formerly an old family in the parish of Glamis, took their name from the lands of Cossins, about a mile northeast from the Castle of Glamis. They were allied in marriage to the Lyons of Clamis (PSAS., II, p. 248). Johannes Cossynnis apud Dunde had a precept of remission in 1492 (RSS., I, 14). The seal of Thomas Cossynnis is appended to a charter in the Glamis collection of date 1509 (Seals, 204; Macdonald, 504). David Cossins in Kinclune, 1662, and two more of name (Brechin).
