Costelloe Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Costello,' i.e. the barony of Costello, County Mayo, Ireland. Dudley Costello, the journalist, although born in Sussex, was son of James Francis Costello, born in the barony of Costello (v. Dictionary of National Biography xii. 276). It seems strange that Philadelphia should possess (if we average five to a family) over 500 Costellos, and London be so poorly represented in its directory.
Mac Oisdealbhaigh This is the first example of a Norman family (in this case Nangle, q.v.) assuming a Mac name. The use of the prefix O is quite wrong. IF 96; Map Mayo; Plate VI
(Irish) The son of Oisdealbh; one who is like a fawn or deer.
Among the many Anglo-Norman settlers in Ireland, temp. Henry II., was Hostilio de Angulo. His descendants were called Mac-Ostello (son of Hostilio) which by still further corruption became Costello.
