This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Costello,' i.e. the barony of Costello, County Mayo, Ireland. Dudley Costello, the journalist, although born in Sussex, was son of James Francis Costello, born in the barony of Costello (v. Dictionary of National Biography xii. 276). It seems strange that Philadelphia should possess (if we average five to a family) over 500 Costellos, and London be so poorly represented in its directory.
