COSTENTIN: A family of this name, vassals of the Stewards, were settled near Innerwick, East Lothian, on lands obtained from their superiors. They probably derived their name from Cotentin, an ancient territory in Normandy, forming the larger part of the department of Manche. Robert, Walter, Nigel, and Gaufrid de Costinten or Costentin appear as witnesses in various documents, principally relating to the Abbey of Paisley, between 1165 and 1204 (RMP., p. 6, 15, 74,232; Cambus., 174; RAA., I, 6; Bain, II, p. 421). Nicholas de Costentin granted "una cultura" of his lands of Innyrwic to the monks of Paisley c. 1200 (RMP., p. 116).
