This surname is derived from an occupation. 'a coucher,' a tapiser, one who made cushions, carpets, hangings, &c The Tapisers and Couchers went together in the York Play, (York Mystery Plays, p. xxiii). Possibly allied to cushion, the latter being a diminutive. But see 'Couch' (Skeat), to lay down, to set, to arrange, Old French coucher; and compare 'Couche, to lay, to place, frequently applied technically to artists' work: "Alle of palle werke fyne Cowchide with newyne."'
