(1) 'of Colston,' a parish in Nottinghamshire The surname early crept into Yorkshire, (a) 'of Coulston,' a parish in Wiltshire, eight miles from Devizes. Edward Colston, merchant and philanthropist, was born at Bristol, 1636 (Dictionary of National Biography xi. 406). The surname, with variants, still exists in Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, and Somerset.
