User-submitted Reference
Cousillas is a galician surname linked to the parish and village of Corme (Ponteceso, A Coruña Spain).
Cousillas coat of arms shows two towers and a silver sword on green fields. The silver sword tells us that it was a french knight who fought in the Castillian civil war between Pedro king of Castille and Enrique Trastamara, his half brother and pretendant. Enrique engaged the french and britonic troops of Bertrand Du Guesclin to fight his cause. After Enrique won the war and became king he rewarded one of the french knights some land in his realm of Trastamara, where Corme was part of. The knight took the name of Cousillas. 100 years later, Galicia was in turmoil for several decades starting with the 'Guerras Irmandiñas' when many Counts and Lords were expelled by the population, among them the Count who inherited the Trastamara lands in Galicia and those who supported him. Many castles and towers, symbols of the aristocracy were destroyed and no single stone remained. Several aristocrats regained their possisions some time later, but Cousillas offspring lost majority of any wealth possessed. Many Cousillas were for centuries sailors and fishermen in the wild coast around Corme called the Death Coast (A Costa da Morte). In 1753 Catastro de la Ensenada, in the town of Corme several Cousillas are referred to as being fishermen and one as having a soap selling business \1
