Of local origin from Cousland in the parish of Cranston, Midlothian. Randulphus de Cousland witnessed a charter by Adam, son of Patric de Crebarrin (now Carbery) of land in Muskilburcscyr in the thirteenth century (RD., p. 103). John Cousland appears in Stirling in 1522, and Walter Cousland, member of council there in 1527, appears again in 1531 as bailie of the burgh (SBR., p. 17,275, 276). Perhaps it was a succeeding Walter Cousland who was custumar of Stirling in 1558 (ER., XIX, p. 38). John Cosland rendered to Exchequer the accounts of the burgh of Dundee in 1559 (ibid., p. 83), and a payment was made to Andro Cowsland in Clony in 1558 (Rent. Dunk., p. 357).
