Of local origin from the lands of Couston near Newtyle, Angus. A family of the name held some position in the shires of Clackmannan and Perth in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries (Stodart, II). David Cowston, chaplain in Dundee, died c. 1505. Several Coustons were burgesses of Dundee in the sixteenth century (Wedd., p. 168), Thomas Cowstoun was tenant in the lordship of Dudop (Dudhope), 1562 (ER., XIX, p. 506), and John Costoun rendered to Exchequer the accounts of the baillies of Dundee, 1565 (ibid., p. 297). Alexander Cowistoun was bailie of Leith, 1576 (REO., p. 295). Gilbert Coustoun was retoured heir in lands in Clackmannan, 1605 (Retours, Clackmannan, 2, 3), Alexander Coustoun was burgess of Culross in 1611 (Dunblane), Alexander Cowstein, weaver in Edinburgh, 1617 (Edinb, Marr.), Janet Couston is recorded in Swinton, 1674 (Lauder), and Archibald Coustoune was a sailor in Leith, 1678 (Inquis., 6092).
