Of territorial origin from Cults in Aberdeenshire. A common surname in Upper Deeside. Richard de Cotis appears as a landowner in Elgyn, 1343 (REM., p. 289). In 1392 John de Cowtis and Donald de Cowtis were put to the horn as part guilty of the slaughter of Sir Walter de Ogilvy, sheriff of Angus and others (APS., I, p. 579). The principal family of the name was established in the earldom of Mar, Aberdeenshire, by a Crown charter in 1433, of the lands of Ochtercoull or Auchtercoul in favor of William Coutts, his brother Alexander, their cousin John, and his brother Alexander (Fordell). William de Coutis witnessed a deed in Aberdeen, 1434 (CRA., p. 5), Alexander Kowtis was admitted burgess of same burgh, 1470 (NSCM., I, p. 22), and William Cottis was master of the ship le James of Scotland, 1473 (Bain, IV, 1411). Robertus Coittis was vicar of Dummany, 1478 (REG., p. 438), Alexander Couts was on an assize of service of James Bonar of Rossie, 1483, and James Coittis was rector of Carstaris, 1525 (REG., 497). Thomas Cowltis was vicar of parish church of Abirkerdowr, 1526 (RAA., II, 635), John Couttis was a "master assoun" of the burgh of Stirling. 1529 (SBR., p. 38), and William Cultis was admitted burgess of Aberdeen, 1531 (NSCM., I, p. 52). Robert Cowtis was retoured heir of John Cowltis of Auchtercoul, his brother-german, 1553 (Retours, Aberdeen, 17), and David Coitis possessed a land in Glasgow in the same year (Protocols, I). Allan Cowttis witnessed precept of sasine of Dunfermline, 1555 (Laing, 633), and Andrew Cowtis was one of the sergeants of the regality of Holyroodhouse, 1583 (Soltre, p. 149). Helen Cutis, goodvyf of Cambarrow, desired relaxation of sentence of excommunication (Strathbogie, p. 83). A family of the name settled in Montrose at the close of sixteenth century, when William Coutts became provost of the town. The name was common in Edinburgh in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries (Edinb. Marr.), and the London banking firm of the name is said to have been founded by a member of the Montrose family.
