Couzens Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This surname is derived from a nickname. 'the cousin,' a kinsman or near relative; Middle English cousin. The final 's' is patronymic, as in Jenkins, Williams, Jones, &c. The Yorkshire directories are still well supplied with instances, but so are many other county directories. Such entries as the following are common:
Henricus Parsoneosyn, 1379: Poll Tax of Yorkshire.
Johannes Vikercosyn. 1379: ibid.
Robert Frere-cosyn, 1379: ibid.
Johannes Cosyn, tiropour, 1379: ibid.

Of the three Cosins in the Dictionary of National Biography, Edmund Cosin. or Cosyn, Vice-chancellor of Cambridge University (fl. 1558), was a native of Bedfordshire; the great John Cosin, bishop of Durham, (born 1594), was a native of Norwich; and the civil lawyer, Richard Cosin (1549-1597) was born at Hartlepool.
This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. In many cases a natural corruption of Custance, one of the most popular of girl-names. But see Cousen and Cousin, which in the singular number generally have a different origin, though here again, perhaps, it is sometimes Cuss-in (v. Cushen). This is a case where, two distinct sources being proved, absolute certainty as to which was the actual origin is impossible.
Ricardus Cusson ( = the son of Cus, i.e. Custance), 1379: Poll Tax of Yorkshire.
Johannes Cusson, 1379: ibid.
1571. Married — Thomas Coossyne and Dorthye Holforde: St. Michael, Cornhill.
1577. Buried — Pawle Standyshe, servant to Thomas Cozin: ibid.
= Cousens, q.v.
