From the city of the name in the county of Warwick, England. Peter de Coventre rendered homage at Berwick, 1291 (RR.). The earliest bearers of the name in Scotland appear to have been churchmen. Johannes de Couentre was a charter witness in Angus, 1344 (RAA., II, p. 19), and William de Couentre granted anew the church of Inhyrharyte (Inverharity) in the diocese of St. Andrews the following year (Pap. Pet., I, p. 89). Thomas de Conventre was canon of Caithness, 1348 (CSR., I, p. 127), Walter de Covingtre was decanus of Aberdour, 1426 (RMS., II, 55), and Patrick Cowentre, rector of Garwald in 1509 (LCD., p. 209), is probably the Patrick Covintre, decanus de Restalrig in 1539. William Covintrie is recorded in Kirkwall, 1612 (MCM., II, p. 157), David Coventrie had a charter of a fourth part of Arlarie in Kinross-shire, 1607 (RD., p. 500). Janet Couentrie in Geeven of Tillibodie, 1621, and eight more of the name are recorded in Dunblane Commissariot Record. Cowentrie 1564.
