Local, from one or other of places of the name but mainly from the ancient barony of Cowie in Kincardineshire. Herbert de Cowy witnessed a charter by Nicholas de Dumfres in 1394 (SCM., V, p. 251). John Cowy was admitted burgess of Aberdeen, 1505 (NSCM., l, p. 43). Janet Cowie or Cuj was a witch in Elgin, 1646 (Rec. Elgin, II, p. 254,356). A family of the name was long connected with Newburgh, Fife, and John Colwye, bailie of Newburcht is recorded in 1617 (Wedd., p. 139). Alexander Covie in Coschnay was heir of John Covie in Reidmyre, 1642 (Retours, Kincardine, 73). In local speech the name is pronounced Cooie or Ku-ie. Calvie 1594, Colvie 1644, Couye 1613, Covy 1668, Cowye 1636.
