Cracknall Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Local or nickname. A curious feature about English nomenclature is the number of surnames which seem inseparably connected with breadbaking. I do not refer to occupative names like Baxter, Baker, Waferer, &c, or local names like Backhouse or Bacchus (q.v). I speak of what seem to be nicknames taken from the loaf itself; compare Simnel, Blanchpain, and Whitebread. Yet Blanchpain is local, and Whitebread, or Whitbread, may be a mere translation (v. Blanchpain). A cracknel is a kind of crisp biscuit. 'Crakenelle, brede, copelullus, fraginellus': Promptorium Parvulorum Nevertheless the surname may be local, with suffix -hall or -hill.
