From Crayke, a village in Yorkshire. An old surname in the Lowlands. Three individuals of the name rendered homage in 1296: Henry de Crake of Dumfriesshire, James de Crake of Selkirkshire, and John de Crak' of Edinburghshire (Bain, II, p. 201,209, 212). The seal of the latter bears a hound running, S' Joh'is de Crake (ibid., p. 547). Adam de Crake was juror on an inquest at Roxburgh, 1303, and Walter de Creyk leased two-thirds of the manor of Blakeder (ibid., 1435; III, p. 37). Thomas Crac, a Scots prisoner of war in the Tower of London, released in 1413 (ibid., IV, 839). Individuals named Crak and Crake were admitted burgesses of Aberdeen, 1458 and 1513 (NSCM., I, p. 16, 45), Andrew Craik witnessed a "letter of sesing of the hold of Dumdurnach," 1453 (CAB., p. 541), and Thomas Creke, a Scot born in Aberdeen, had letters of denisation in England, 1480 (Bain, IV, 1465).
