Surnames current in Fife. From Crambeth the old spelling of Crombie, a village and ancient parish in Fife now comprehended in the parish of Torryburn. William de Cram' witnessed a charter by Gilbert, earl of Strathern a. 1198 (LIM., p. xxiv). Gilbert de Crambeth was one of assize of marches in Fife, 1230 (RD., 196), Duncan de Crambyt witnessed quitclaim of land of Drumkerauch, 1260 (RPSA., p. 346;, and Matthew de Crombech or Crambeth, canon of Dunkeld, 1283 (Pap. Lett., I, p. 469), afterwards became hishop of Dunkeld (Dowden, p. 59—60). Sir Hervy de Crambathe, dean of Dunkeld, rendered homage in 1296. His seal bears the Virgin and Child, etc., and S'Hervei de Crambeth decani Aberdonen (Bain, II, p. 195,543). Willelmus de Crambreth witnessed confirmation of a charter by Malise, earl of Strathern, 1360 (Scon, p. 136), John Cramby, witness in Perth, 1463 (Milne, p. 53), and Andrew Cramby, witness in Edinburgh, 1481 (EBR., 40). John Cramby witnessed a charter by the abbot of Scone to William Peblis, 1491 (Scon, p. 201), and Henry Cramby was vicar of Kylspyndy in the same year (loc. cit.). Andrew Cramy, merchant of Scotland, had safe conduct in England, 1473 (Bain, IV, 1407), Thomas Crammy was king's tenant in lands in Ardmanoch, 1504 (ER., XII, p. 660), Bartholomew Cramby was burgess of Perth, 1523, and James Crambe had a feu of part of the lands of Lethindey, 1586 (Scon, p. 228,232). The old family of Crambeth of that Ilk are now of Dawhill, Kincardineshire. Thomas Cramby was burgess of Perth c. 1534 (Rollok, 85).
