From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

From the lands, now parish, of Cramond in West Lothian and partly in Midlothian. An early offshoot of the family is found in Angus in the latter half of the thirteenth century, where they were proprietors of Aldbar, and so continued till 1577 (Jervise LL., p. 320). The Crawmounts of Fullarton were an old family in Maryton parish, Angus. Magister William de Caraumund was "clericus de wardropa domini regis" (Alexander III) in 1278 (RD., p. 52, 53). In 1289, as de Cramund, he was clerk of Sir Alexander de Baliol, chamberlain of Scotland, and John de Cramund was escheator of the same Sir Alexander de Baliol north of the Forth in 1292 (Bain, II, 374,599). Laurence de Craumound of Forfarshire and William de Cramund of Edinbuighshire rendered homage in 1296. The seal of the latter, a cleric, bears the Virgin and Child, S' Willelmi de Cramond, clerici (ibid., p. 199,211, 551). Lawrens of Cramond was one of assize on the marches of Woodwrae in 1388 (Bamff, p. 22), Thomas Cramount, merchant, had a safe conduct to travel in England in 1476 (Bain, IV, 1439), and Sir Alexander Cramond of that Ilk is referred to in 1505 as Crabmond, Crabmonde, Crawmonde, and Grammont (Nisbet). Cramont 1717, Craumvnde and Crawmonde 1447, Cravmunde 1483, Crawmound 1586, Crawmont 1511. William Cramond (1844—1907) was an industrious and accurate local historian of latter half of nineteenth century.
