An Old English personal name. See Cranston. In 1261 an inquest found that a man named Crane had held, by gift of King William the Lion, the lands of Inyaney and the office of gate-keeper of the royal castle, and that he never raised an army or gave assistance or did anything else in the world for the said lands, except gate-keeper of our lord the king's castle of Montrose ("Nec dederunt auxilium nec aliquid aliud in mundo pro dicta terra facerunt nisi officium Janue Castri domini Regis de Munros") (APS., I, p. 100). Cran and Crann axe current in the shires of Aberdeen, Banff, and Inverness, and Patrick Crane is recorded in Aberdeen in 1398 (CRA., p. 373). Crane is the spelling used by an old family in the parish of Maryton.
The English personal name Crane is commonly said to be from the name of the bird, but we must remember that mediaeval epithet names are often something entirely different when properly studied. So many of the beast, bird, and fish names which enter so largely into personal nomenclature belong to a very old stratum, and in fact go back definitely to heathen times, "and there is no evidence that they were given as nicknames. They are real personal names, traditional with the race, given at birth with little or no thought of any application of the name to the appearance or disposition of the child.".
(English) a nickname or sign-name from the bird so called [Middle English crane, Old English cran]
(English) Dweller at the sign of the crane; one who lived near the Crane river in England.
The bird-probably first applied to a tall, meagre person. Cran, Crane. H.R.
From Crane in Camborne; from grean, gravel; or croan, the cross. Hals says, "Crane adjoining Roswarne gave name to its possessor, Cit-Crane, who gave bustards or cranes for his arms; for as crana, krana, is as grus in Latin, so it is a crane in English, garan and cryhyr in the Welsh"
