This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Crank.' I cannot find the spot in North Lancashire. But there is a place in Rainford, Lancashire, called Crank, which has given name to Crank Station. Crank Hall and Crank Farm are still properties there.

'James Cranke (1746-1826), artist, was born at Urswick-in-Furness about 1746. It is supposed that he studied in London, in the studio of his uncle, James Cranke (1717-80), and afterwards settled at Warrington as a portrait-painter': Dictionary of National Biography.
