From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

From the lands or barony of the name in Midlothian, the 'tun of Cran or Cren.' Certain individuals of this name are mentioned in early charters but it is not now possible to establish their connection with one another. Elfric de Cranston is one of the witnesses to a charter by William the Lion to Holyrood (Dalrymple, p. 350) Thomas de Cranystoun in the reign of Alexander 11 made a donation to the hospital of Soltre of some lands lying near Paistoun in East Lothian for the welfare of his own soul and for the souls of his ancestors and successors (Soltre, p. 19). Andrew de Cragestone (an error for Cranestone) of Edinburghshire rendered homage, 1296. His seal bears a crane (canting heraldry), S' Andree de Cranist (Bain, II, p. 199,550). Another Andrew de Cranstoun, dominus de eodem, apparently the first so styled, was dead before 1338 (Neubotle, p. 167). Thomas de Cranstoun, provost of Edinburgh, 1423 (Egidii, p. 45; LSC., p. 228), may be Thomas of Creinstour ambassador of James, king of Scots, 1449 (Bain, IV, 1218). William of Cranstoun was one of the conservators of the truce between Scotland and England, 1451 (ibid., 1239). Andrew Crenestoun, witness in Edinburgh, 1515 (Laing, 311). Some early Cranstons did their best to live up to their family motto, 'Thou shalt want ere I want,' being notorious reivers. Cranstone 1451, Cranestowne 1641, Craynston 1427, Crenestone (of that Ilk) 1534.
