This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'the cross-weller,' one who resided by the cross-well. Mr. Lower writes, 'In the middle ages, when many wells were deemed sacred, crosses were often erected near them, to denote their sanctity. A resident near such a spot would readily acquire the surname of "atte Cross-well," which would afterwards modify itself to Crossweller' (Patronymica Britannica). There can be no doubt that Crossweller means one who dwelt beside the cross-well; compare Bridger, Crosser, Bridgman, Crossman, &c. With the variant Crassweller, compare Craswell for Crosswell.
