From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
The surname of an old family in Berwickshire, shortened from Auchencraw, which see. "Craw of Auchencraw in the Merss, an old family now extinct" (Nisbet). The family was forfeited for their complicity in Mar's Rebellion (1715). Walter Crawe was one of an inquest held at Berwick-on-Tweed, 1370 (Bain, IV, 175). Stephen Craw had a remission for His share in burning the town of Dunbertane, 1489 (Lennox, II, p. 133). John Craw, schoolmaster of Colinton, Midlothian, was deposed in 1655 for brewing and selling 'aile' "near the Kirk and hard by the minister's yate" (Grant, Call of the Pentlands, p. 20). Patrick Craw was retoured heir in lands in the barony of Coldinghame, etc., 1679 (Retours, Berwick, 400). Sixteen persons of the name are recorded in the Commissariot Record of Lauder between 1561—1800. James Hewat Craw (1880—1933) was a distinguished Scottish archaeologist.
Nisbet says: "Craw of Auchencraw in the Merss, an old family, now extinct." This seems to be a northernism for Crow, Crowe. The arms contain three rarce cures-videlicet white crows.
