Knifesmith--This surname is derived from an occupation. 'the knifesmith,' a maker of knives; compare Cutler. It has been stated as beyond need of evidence that Nasmith and Neasmith are corrupted forms of Nailsmith, a maker of nails. The instances furnished below seem to point strongly in favour of knifesmith. For the other theory I have found no evidence.

1591. Married — Roberte Knysmithe and Elizabeth Weekes: St. Michael, Cornhill.

1595. Baptised — Elizabeth, d. Robert Knysmythe: ibid.

The earlier and complete form is found in the Valor Ecclesiasticus, viz. Henry Knyfesmythe. But it will be seen at once by any candid observer that, failing evidence to the contrary.

Neasmith and Nasmith are corruptions of the old Knifesmith. Besides, Nailer (v. Naylar) was the accepted occupative term for a maker of nails.
