A surname derived from an occupation. G crtathrar, generally rendered (the miller's) 'sifter,' but more correctly translated 'sievewright.' It is the name of a small sept at one time fairly numerous in Strathsney and Lochtayside. They are ranked as Mackintoshes and some persons of the name in the United States now call themselves Mackintosh (Celt. Mon., V, p. 279). John McAchrerar had half of Balinlagan, 1541 (FB., p. 356). In 1554 there was complaint of oppression by William Crerar on the tenants of the Abbey of Coupar (SCM., II, p. 215). Individuals of the name are also in record in Glenurquhay in 1594 (BBT.). See also Celt. Mag., VI, p. 38. John Crerar (1827—1889), a Chicago merchant of Scottish parentage, gave that city the sum of two and a half million dollars as an endowment fund for a public library.
